Vegan Sha-tak (Lhasa Special)
Every Tibetan family makes some version of shaptra — stir-fried meat/Veg — because it is so easy and tasty. Despite the fact that Tibetans survive in the high Himalayan region known to the world as the 3rd Pole or the roof of the world. The average elevation of Tibet is 3500 meters above sea level, and at such height, rarely any vegetables grow, and therefore, meat and diary products are their stable diets. However, after coming into exile, with wide varieties of options to choose from, many Tibetans have tailor-made their traditional foods. One such dish is Sha-tak or shaptra as it is widely known among Tibetans. Sha-tak is mainly a stir-fried sliced meat dishes served with tomatoes, scallions and bell peppers w/ tingmo (steamed bun) or rice.
Here, at Café Tibet, we are doing our freshly-cooked vegan version of Sha-tak that is a conglomeration of tofu with vegetables. Come and enjoy Sha-tak with us.
